Does Santa = God? -- by Marie Beer
(2003)
I have gathered the following evidence that tends to demonstrate
that Santa = God.
1. Both figures live in places figured as "up"
- (the sky, the north pole).
2. People communicate directly with both Santa and God
(by way of praying, letter writing).
3. Often the communication is comprised of requests (
for toys, candy, organ donation).
4. In both cases, wishes are granted contigent upon "being
good" (drinking milk, following commandments).
5. Both figures are old anglo-saxon men with white beards.
(obvious one).
6. Santa and God each have a host of helpers (angels,
elves).
7. Both men like to have sacrifices made to them (goats
and virgins, cookies and milk).
In addition, while looking at Rubens' many depictions
of Jesus sacrificed on the cross (ribs slashed, palms
bleeding, cheeks hollow), I came to know the most central
questions of all: Who is Jesus in relation to Santa? Is
Jesus Santa's Son? If the elves ARE actually Santa's children
(as asserted in Blaine Souther's dissertation, SANTA'S
CHILDREN), is Jesus, therefore an elf?
If Jesus is an elf, which elf is he?
I was also wondering: Is hell actually the South Pole?
A question: Why does Santa have a wife whereas God does not? It's good to reflect during the holidays, I think.
